“Common Sense” calling ….

We have all seen the letters CE on many products as it is required to show that the manufacturers have checked that the EU safety, health or environmental requirements are being met. It is a useful indicator that the goods comply with EU legislation and means that such goods can freely be marketed within the European market. Furthermore, it is globally accepted as the “gold standard”.
As part of the Brexit shake-up for regulations, the British government decided to introduce what is known as UKCA. Basically, the same as CE, but for British goods. This trade mark applies for most of the products for which the CE was hitherto used. Many British firms have already invested millions in the back-up infrastructure in anticipation of this projected shift. Unfortunately, this trade mark is not recognised on the EU market. It therefore also cannot be used in Northern Ireland as this remains part of the EU single market in order to avoid a physical border between North and South.
It doesn`t take much brain matter to realise that this is a duplication which purely generates more red tape, more checking, and thus more costs which the consumer will eventually have to pay.
Fortunately, some pragmatism has found its way into the discussion and the government is going to provide businesses in Great Britain more flexibility in this matter. On the gov.uk website it states “… the government intends to extend recognition of the CE marking for placing most goods on the market in Great Britain, indefinitely, beyond December 2024”
“Common Sense” call accepted.
